Student Life at MSU

The ALIF program hosts a diverse group of students with a common interest in being part of a community of Arabic speakers and sharing this culture at an academic and social level.
Students enjoy the benefits of small Arabic language classes and specially designed general education content classes taught in Arabic. Students interact almost entirely with authentic materials such as short stories, novels, articles, and films, and actively participate in class discussions (often leading them) and collaborate in small group work. Oral presentations and written research projects are also essential components of ALIF classes. ALIF faculty meet regularly with their students to provide one-on-one feedback and guidance. Students form a close community with each other and with the ALIF faculty and staff. Many students live, eat, and study together. ALIF extra and co-curricular activities such as movie nights and potlucks provide opportunities for more informal conversation with classmates and faculty. Students also enjoy field trips every semester such as to the Arab American National Museum or perhaps a tour of a mosque, church, Middle Eastern restaurant, Arabic bookstore, or Arabic newspaper office in Dearborn, MI.
